Dance and Culture: The Making of a Nation

The Jamaica Cultural Alliance proudly presents its 28th Annual Tea Party, celebrating Dance and Culture: The Making of a Nation.

This year’s Tea Party celebrates the birth of Jamaican Creative Dance and the cultural movement that helped shape a nation. We honor the pioneering work of Ivy Baxter and the influence of Garth Fagan. Through dance, Jamaicans found a powerful expression of identity, heritage, and pride.

Ivy Baxter’s contribution to Jamaican culture remains one of the most significant chapters in the development of the nation’s artistic identity. Her pioneering work laid the foundation for a uniquely Jamaican form of creative dance that drew inspiration from the rhythms, traditions, and stories of the Jamaican people. Her vision helped transform dance into a vehicle for cultural expression and national pride.

The influence of Garth Fagan further expanded the reach of Jamaican dance on the international stage. His innovative approach to movement and choreography inspired generations of dancers and artists, demonstrating the global impact of Caribbean creativity and excellence.

As we reflect on the legacy of these cultural pioneers, we celebrate the enduring role of dance in preserving history, strengthening communities, and showcasing the richness of Jamaican heritage. Their contributions continue to inspire artists, educators, cultural practitioners, and audiences around the world.

Join us as we commemorate this important cultural milestone and pay tribute to the individuals whose dedication, creativity, and vision helped shape the story of Jamaican dance and culture.
